Washington recreational weed went on sale today making the state the second, following Colorado to allow recreational pot shops.
There were long lines even before dawn and supplies were limited. Only 5 of the state’s 334 locations were open but it was enough to make this a memorable day. Not all stores were open the first day in Colorado either. More stores will be opening soon as the WSLCB wades through the mass of paperwork and red tape it created.
The other glitch keeping stores from opening is the short supply of marijuana and licensed producers. The video below captures the opening moments pretty well. All in all Washington’s first day selling recreational marijuana has to be considered a resounding success.
Opening Day For Washington Recreational Pot Shops
I-502′s lead architect and ACLU attorney Alison Holcomb told the crowd of journalists in Seattle, amassed outside the doors to Cannabis City:
“We are moving marijuana out of the shadows, regulating it for consumer and community safety, dedicating new tax revenues to keeping kids healthy, and keeping them in school. … We are finally taking marijuana out of the criminal justice system and treating it as a public health issue. http://blog.seattlepi.com/marijuana/2014/07/08/legal-recreational-marijuana-goes-on-sale-for-first-time-in-washington-state/#24883101=0&24866103=0&14194105=0
